UNA-UK welcomes Prime Minister’s announcement of a technological values summit

The Prime Minister attempted to demonstrate the value of the UK on the world stage as an initiator of important projects, in this instance with respect to emerging technology. The focus continues a thread started by his predecessor, who in a speech to Davos in 2018 declared UK’s commitment to international leadership in “ethical AI”.

Lord Ahmad: there is a ‘moral imperative’ to stop threat to media freedom

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Lord Ahmad said that a free media is essential to any democracy, and the bedrock on which other freedoms are borne and built. He said that it is needed for free and open debate, to root out corruption and hold governments to account.

Sustainable development summit a reminder of ‘the boundless potential of humanity’

The first UN summit on the progress of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development closed on a hopeful note, with Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed declaring that the two-day event had been a reminder of “the boundless potential of humanity to create a better future for all”.

UK’s post-Brexit relationship with the EU

A leaked European Commission memo has said the latest draft proposals from the UK for a new Brexit deal “fall short of satisfying all the objectives of the Irish backstop”.

Meanwhile, Labour MPs vow to revive Commons push for a second referendum in bid to end Brexit ‘crisis.
