Matrix’s Legal Support Service will provide The view from outside, a weekly look at the UK’s relationship with the outside world.

UK and the UN

UK Ambassador Jonathan Allen, UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, commented that progress has been made since the transition to a new government in Sudan at the Security Council briefing on Sudan.

Last week UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that UN staff may not be paid in November as a result of member states’ failure to pay their annual contributions. The UNA- UK has responded here.

Evaluation of UK’s international obligations

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab answered an Urgent Question in the House of Commons about Turkey’s incursion into north east Syria. The UNA- UK has made a statement on the Turkish invasion of Northern Syria here.

UK’s post-Brexit relationship with the EU

Boris Johnson has announced Brexit done deal despite DUP objections to new agreement. Downing Street is set to launch a charm offensive as it attempts to win Parliament’s backing for Boris Johnson’s new Brexit deal but Angela Merkel has told EU leaders a Brexit extension would be unavoidable if British MPs vote down the deal agreed with Boris Johnson. Meanwhile, Sajid Javid rejected calls by MPs to publish an economic impact assessment of Boris Johnson’s new Brexit deal before they vote on it. The Liberal Democrats have launched a fresh attempt to secure a second Brexit referendum on any deal that Boris Johnson strikes with the European Union.
